Healthy Dialogues is delivering a comprehensive programme of behaviour change and population health training for staff across the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust. This programme is designed to build practical skills, confidence, and long-term capability, enabling both clinical and non-clinical staff to have effective, culturally competent conversations about health and wellbeing.

Grounded in NICE guidance and Making Every Contact Count (MECC) principles, the training supports staff to embed prevention into everyday practice, contributing to improved patient outcomes and a stronger population health approach across the Trust.

Our behaviour change programme

We provide a tiered training model that supports staff at different stages of experience and responsibility, while creating a clear pathway for progression and leadership.

Intermediate Training – Very Brief Interventions (VBI)

Our Intermediate training focuses on equipping staff with the skills to initiate short, meaningful conversations about health and wellbeing within routine interactions.

Delivered as a 2–3 hour session (online or in-person), the training supports participants to:

  • Recognise opportunities to start healthy conversations
  • Use simple, evidence-based frameworks to guide discussions
  • Apply culturally competent, person-centred communication skills
  • Confidently signpost to appropriate local and national support services

Sessions are highly interactive, combining discussion, practical exercises, and scenario-based roleplay to ensure staff leave feeling confident applying skills immediately in their role.

Advanced Training – Extended Brief Interventions & Train-the-Trainer

Our Advanced programme is a two-day, in-person training designed to deepen behaviour change expertise and support sustainable implementation across teams.

Participants will:

  • Develop advanced communication skills informed by Motivational Interviewing
  • Learn how to explore ambivalence and support behaviour change over longer conversations
  • Build confidence in adapting approaches to different individuals, cultures, and contexts
  • Gain the skills to deliver training to colleagues within their own services

The programme includes practical assignments and opportunities to practise delivering training in a supportive environment, helping participants transition into leadership and training roles.

Optional accreditation through the Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH) Level 2 Award in Supporting Behaviour Change is available.

Resources to support behaviour change practice

Training is supported by a comprehensive suite of practical resources designed for ongoing use beyond the sessions.

These include:

  • Workbooks and facilitator guides
  • Scenario banks and case studies
  • Quick-reference tools for use in day-to-day practice
  • Reflective prompts to support supervision and peer learning
  • Signposting resources linked to local and national services
